Meet at the location marked in the map displayed on this page at 9 am on Sat. Feb, 22, 2020. This is parking near the entrance for Golden Gardens park alongside the trees and picnic tables, just north of the  large parking lot for the boaters. (We like this area because it has the shortest carry to the water, however the walk to the bathrooms is a little long from here.) Be dressed and ready for action at 9:45 am. We will launch around 10 am after a short discussion.

We will be evaluating your strokes and rescues. We will review your quiz as well as engage in verbal discussion which will further test your knowledge. Be prepared to speak on a variety of topics relevant to sea kayaking in our region at an introductory level. After completing the above to the satisfaction of the leader, you will be granted basic sea kayaking equivalency and, with trip leader's permission, will be able to sign up for trips appropriate to your level of skill and experience.

Required Equipment

Please be dressed for immersion in 45 degree water and bring the "essentials" listed below. Your sea kayak must have perimeter deck lines to help facilitate efficient rescue. Please also bring food for snacks and lunch as well as something non-alcoholic to drink to stay hydrated. As it will be cold, you may want to bring a thermos with a hot beverage. We will be eating lunch at another location, so you need this packed into your boat or on your person. Have an extra layer handy to put on during lunch to keep warm.

These eight essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips.  All but the whistle and clothing should be provided with any kayak rental.

  1. Floatation in both ends of the kayak
  2. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  3. Paddle
  4. Spray skirt
  5. Bilge pump with floatation
  6. Self-rescue paddle float
  7. Waterproof whistle
  8. Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally
