This play day in Deception Pass will be a little different. Rather than everyone work on their own thing, we will each bring two skill exercises to offer to the group as a skill building challenge. Working on our own challenges is fine, but we may avoid some skills that are harder for us. By taking on challenges posed by others, we’ll develop skills that we would otherwise not work on.
To join, ask for leader’s permission and tell me two skills that you want to bring to the group. It can be something simple or complex. Easy or challenging. The skill does not need to be related to currents. A skill that you are working on yourself or one that you are quite good at and wish to help others develop. Most of the day we will have moderate currents, more appropriate for skills of finesse over power.
Be specific in your skills. What, exactly. A skill that you can describe. Perhaps teach other people how to do it. Or explain what it looks like and we worth together to figure out how to do it.
Registration opens on Jan 23. I’ll inform everyone on the trip that they have permission before that day. I’ll inform everyone who is on the waitlist that they have permission on Jan 24th.
Registration will close one week before the trip, on March 2nd. If you hold your registration on the trip or waitlist beyond that date, please also hold a strong commitment to attend. Cancelling within the week before often results in the space not filled. If something does come up that requires you to cancel after registration closes - and I know things do - simply write to me.
Participants should be experienced paddling in Deception Pass 5kt ebb currents. That is, you are able to reliably cross the eddy line. You can return to the same side, or cross to the other. Participants should also be prepared to paddle in the max conditions stated below.
Max conditions: 25kt sustained wind, 5ft waves, low temperature of 37F. There are a lot of protected waters around DP, so we won’t paddle in these conditions for long, but likely will go into them, if present. No significant storm warnings.
I anticipate that we will spend the morning east of the pass on the flood currents. Lunch around noon. We will have some time on the ebb current. Return to Bowman Bay no later than 3:00. If wind and waves are significant, we will change plans to make use of these conditions.
Meet at Bowman Bay at 8:00 am and launch by 8:30. Expect to be back to Bowman bay by 3:00 at the latest.
