Trip

Sea Kayak - Deception Pass

Join fellow current enthusiasts for a moderate current playday in Deception Pass.

  • Sea Kayak IV
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 4.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 12 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 2 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 5.23 kts
  • Pace: 2.5 kt/hr

This is a play day and will not include instruction.  Participants must have experience paddling in currents greater than 5 kt, as well as self and assisted rescue skills and should plan on staying with the group for the entire day.  Leadership style will be collaborative decision making with leader reserving final say when necessary.  We will launch from Bowman Bay at 9 AM.  After paddling around Lighthouse Point, we will have some time to warm up with some practice rolls and braces as the flood turns to ebb. Alternatively, if time allows, we may scoot through the Pass and around the east end of Pass Island to catch the building ebb current to the west end of Pass Island.  Lunch will be on the beach next to Canoe Pass at 11 followed by play in the ebb current through the Pass.  Peak ebb is between 1 and 2, following which we will return to Bowman Bay.

Meet in the parking lot of Bowman Bay State Park at 8 AM.  You will need a Discovery Pass.  Please plan to be geared up and have your boat ready  for a beach talk at 8:30 and launch by 9.
