Whiskey Dick Mountain is part of the LT Murray Wildlife Area in Eastern Washington. There are more than 10,000 acres of shrub-step habitat dominated by sagebrush, bitterbrush, and native bunchgrasses. In spring, we can expect to see balsamroot, lupine, and hedgehog cactus in bloom. We will also look and listen for birds, including meadowlarks, mountain bluebirds, and raptors.
We will plan to hike for 6-8 miles at a 1.5 mph pace. Actual mileage will depend on how often we stop for observations and pictures. This is an out-and-back hike so we will set a turn around time at about 3 hours in order to be back at the trailhead by 3 – 3:30 pm. We will be hiking on dirt roads with several steep, rocky sections and rolling hills.
Bring snacks, water, and lunch, Bring any field guides/apps and binoculars if you have them. If not, the leader may have a few pairs to loan. Please email me in advance if you’d like to borrow a pair. The terrain is exposed and the ridge line is windy. The area is adjacent to the Wild Horse Wind and Solar Farm and where wind speeds average 17 mph. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and wind-blocking clothing are required. Dress in layers and wear hiking boots/shoes adequate for rocky, steep slopes. Bring trekking poles if you use them.
