Naturalist Trip - Upper Gold Creek Valley

Trip focusing on fungi & enjoyment of autumn colors. Trip leaders, while not mushroom experts, are happy to share what they know. BE SURE TO READ LEADER'S NOTES.

  • Easy/Moderate
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 10.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 900 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 3,100 ft
  • Pace: Conducive to observing & studying fungi (read Leader's Notes)
  • 9:00am, meet in North Bend, in the parking lot near the former Chase Bank  712 SW Mt Si Blvd, North Bend, WA 98045
This is the same parking lot as the Safeway store.  At the meeting location, we will arrange carpools.
  • Leader's permission is required because the trail is rocky and brushy in places, there are water crossings and it's preferrable (but not guaranteed) to reach the junction with the Alaska Lake trail. The later would make the entire trip 10 miles.
  • This trip is for you if you can sustain the pace described below, your Mountaineers activity profile shows that you have done so in the past 2-3 months & have experience on rough trails in wet conditions.
  • No expertise in fungi identification is required to join this trip.
  • First ~1.5 miles are on a gravel road through a recreational home subdivision.  Here our pace will be brisk (2 - 2.5 mph).
  • Once the actual forest trail begins, it's another ~1 mi in the national forest before reaching the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and the best habitat for fungi on our route.  Within national forest, we may pause to observe fungi, but will reserve most of our time to be in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.  In the stretch before reaching Alpine Lake Wilderness, our pace may be 1.5-2.0 mph.
  • Once we are in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, the pace will depend on what we find.
