Naturalist Trip - The Stilly, Skagit & Samish
/Join our driving tour of the sloughs, estuaries and flats of the area in search of fall migrants, resident waterfoul, raptors /and woodland birds. We will stop at several birding hotspots. Birders are welcome to share their skills and knowledge to maximize our bird viewing and learning. This is trip is reschuled from 10/25/2025 which cancelled due to inclement weather.

Please note that this is a rescheduled trip and many participants have been preregistered due to the cancelation of the original trip date.
Carpooling is the key! We will drive on two lane farm roads with narrow parking strips that don't accomodate many cars. Walkie talkies will be provided for communication between cars.
Our goal is to identify resident and fall migrating birds. This will be a full day of driving from Wylie Slough to Samish Island with stops along our way at several birding hotspots. At our stops we will walk along gravel or dirt trails which may be muddy or have puddles.
For those of you who have questions or are new to this type of birding tour please call me at 206-550-3890 so I can explain the protocol and ettiquite.
Bring:
- Discover Pass
- Drivers need a full tank of gas
- Riders bring money to pay your drivers
- 10 Essentials
- Binnoculars and Scope if you have one.
- Birding guide book or birding app like the free Merlin App.
- Lunch, snacks and water. We will stop for lunch.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes. There may be mud and puddles we have to walk through.
- Dress for the weather. It may be rainy, windy and chilly. Rain gear can serve to protect you from the wind in additon to the rain.
Carpooling is essential on this trip. We will drive on 2 lane farm roads with narrow parking strips.
Meet at 7:00am at the Ash Way Park & Ride located at 16327 Ash Way in Lynnwood, WA 98087. We will park on the left as you enter the parking lot and form carpools to leave promptly by 7:20 am. We will form a caravan to arrive at Wylie Slough, our first stop between 8:30 and 9:00am. Then continue our caravan to subsequent hotspots.
We will stop for a quick restroom break at the Smokey Point 1-5 Northbound Rest Area at MP 207, 8.2 miles north of Marysville. This is an alturnate meet up location for people who live north of Lynwood.
There is a pit toilet at Wylie Slough and restrooms and commerical portable toilets along our tour.
