Naturalist Trip - Black Canyon (Umtanum Ridge)

This hike includes a Caravan drive from Howard's Way Trailhead Park near Ellensburg and on to Black Canyon Trailhead with several stops along the way for bird and flower identification. Wee are shooting for the spring megration of birds as the yare newly arrived and heavy into nesting and also the many shrub-steppe spring flowers. both at Black Canyon and along the way. Additional attractions are viesw and outstand rock formations, as well as observing an area recover from a massive fire severeal years ago.

Binoculars are helpful for birding. Apps and books can be used for flowr and bird ID. There will be lots to see and identify.

We will meet at 9 AM at Howards Way rest area and caravan from there, with some possible redistribution  of riders and cars. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is necessary for the road into black canyon trailhead. We can carpool from Seattle or surrounding areas, with cars meeting at 6:45 AM from, for example Green Lake Park and Ride under I5 at 65th Street NE.
