Intermediate Snowshoe - Artist & Huntoon Points

2 days / 1 night of winter camping in the shadows of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan. We'll snowshoe from the Bagley Lakes trailhead to Artist Point, and then follow the ridge out to Huntoon Point. We'll set up camp, explore as time allows, and take in the area's panoramic views.

Day 1: Starting our trek near at the Bagley Lakes trailhead, we'll have a modest 2 mile, 1100' gain snowshoe up towards Austin Pass and the Lake Ann trailhead.  We'll then traverse a plateau below the summertime road and ascend to Artist Point.  Following the ridge to the SE, we'll make our way to Huntoon Point.  We'll set up our base camp, explore the area as time/conditions allow, and enjoy a night of winter camping.

Day 2: We'll return to the trailhead, following approximately the same path we used on our way in.

We'll trek at a moderate pace with brief stops for snacks/views. Participants should have an excellent fitness base, given the weight of winter camping equipment as well as the trip's distance and elevation gain.

In your request for leader's permission, please detail your winter camping experience and summarize the winter-capable gear (shelter, sleep system, cooking system, clothing) that you will bring in order to stay safe.

No-Go's (aka, reasons the trip will be cancelled):
  • 1" or more of rain forecast per day
  • Sustained winds > 25mph
  • Single-digit temps
  • Avalanche danger of Considerable

As this is a winter overnight, participants should be prepared for varied weather conditions and must bring winter-capable shelter and sleep system, cooking / water treatment systems, and clothing.

Blue bags are required, and all waste must be carried out.  Each participant should bring a shovel for digging a communal dining area and preparing a site for your tent.

Chains need to be carried in all cars, even 4WD/AWD.
