Intermediate Alpine Climb - Mount Rainier/Kautz Glacier

Intermediate alpine climb aimed at Kitsap's 2021 Alpine Ice graduates as an experience climb. We will open to all members after giving these climbers a shot at the climb.

There are a couple of pitches of alpine ice climbing so participants should be graduates of the Alpine Ice Climbing course or equivalent.

  • The Ten Essentials
  • Mountain boots that can accept crampons (not hiking boots)
  • Crampons
  • An ice axe (and technical ice tools)
  • A sleeping bag rated to +20 degrees or colder
  • A sleeping pad - closed foam and inflatable as we will be sleeping on snow
  • A back pack (40 to 60 liters)
  • Webbing and accessory cords
  • 6 straight gate carabiners
  • 2 locking carabiners
  • Large pear-shaped locking carabiner
  • Belay device
  • Climbing harness
  • Helmet
  • Chock pick (nut tool) (not required)
  • Rescue pulley
  • Fleece or puffy jacket
  • Rain jacket and full-zip rain pants
  • Belay gloves
  • Warm gloves or mittens
  • Cordelette
  • 2 Pickets per person and several ice screws
  • Extra webbing or cord
