Download the preliminary itinerary.

Info Session:  Come to Wide World Books and Maps, 4411 Wallingford Ave N, Seattle at 7PM on November 11 for an informative session of photos and information about touring and trekking in Turkey!

Itinerary Highlights:   Tour Istanbul for 3 days, visiting the many-layered 'old city' with its many Roman and Greek artifacts, huge and lovely mosques, old Byzantine churches, wooden Ottoman houses, elaborate palaces and exotic markets;  dine above the Golden Horn watching the bustle of commerce below; and cruise the ancient sea route along the Bosporus to the Black Sea. Then spend 4 days touring the exceptional Greek historic sites along the Aegean coast, such as Ephesus, Pergamon, Aphrodisias and the “cotton cliffs” and spas of Pamukkale, before finishing with bus transport to the nearest airport for flights home, or to the start of the main Lycian Way itinerary.

Time of Year:  We’ll travel during April-May, when weather is warm but not hot and crowds haven’t yet begun to swarm.

Lodging:   Conveniently located 3 to 4 star hotels (double occupancy).

Food:   We’ll enjoy Turkish breakfasts at our hotels and fabulous  meals of locally-made Turkish specialties in small casual but excellent restaurants along our route.   We may stop along the road at small villages to have a simple lunch hand made for us.   Turkish food is an addictive mix of sun-ripened vegetables with olive oil, spices, unleavened breads and roasted meats, a fusion of Asian, Ottoman and Western.

Leader’s Experience:  Cheryl Talbert has been a Mountaineers hike and backpack leader since 2009, and a Global Outings leader since 2011.   She has led or co-led a number of extended backpacks in the US as well as  successful trips and treks to Peru, Turkey, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Australia, Belize, Patagonia and Nepal.

Participant Requirements:   Must be a current Mountaineers member with an up to date waiver on file.   An ability to handle exotic cultures, bustling crowds and a very different language, plus a positive attitude and ability to get along well with groups touring together for days at a time, will be very important.

Trip Price Detail:  $1800 for the full Istanbul-Aegean extension (final prices may vary depending on the final headcount and itinerary).   This includes all lodging, ground transport and guided tours, luggage transport, and nearly all meals, plus Mountaineers admin fee and a portion of the leader’s costs.   The price does not include international airfares (~ $1,300), additional hotel nights before and after the itinerary, some lunches, snacks and drinks in town, optional tours, or any personal items.

Registration Instructions:  Please download and complete this application form and email it to the leader. Please indicate that you are interested in the Istanbul- Aegean extension.  After the leader’s approval, please call the Mountaineers at 206-521-6001 with your credit card number to pay a $500 deposit which holds your space on the extension roster.   Registration will close on January 15, or sooner if space has filled up. The balance of the trip price is due by January 15.

Cancellation Policy: If you cancel because of an emergency, you may receive a refund less expenses incurred and a $100 administrative fee.
