If you are longing for sweeping views, this is the hike for you! A short walk (approx. 1½ miles) along a dirt road in the L.T. Murray Wildlife Recreation Area will take us to the start of the official trail, which climbs through a ravine to Umtanum Ridge. From there, the views expand in every direction and the trail hugs the rim of the ridge as it continues on for miles. Views include Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams, the Yakima River and mountains and ridges beyond. This area is rich in wildflowers in season, birds, wildlife (deer, elk, big horn sheep, etc.) and views, so you’ll want to bring binoculars and a camera if you have them. Over the ankle boots are required for this trip. Social pace, approximately 8 miles round trip, 2400' elvation gain. Not required, but I recommend the Green Dot Road map of the Wenas area for this hike, which you can request from the Department of Fish & Wildlife - Yakima Office. It takes about 1 week to receive this in the mail and the cost to have it mailed to you is less than the USGS map. Contact leader for details.
