Day Hike - Woodard Bay

Family Bat and Cormorant Hike! This cool short hike will give us a chance to watch the new cormorant nesting colony on Woodard Bay, then head to the Bat viewing area for a snack while we wait for the mama bats to fly. Walk back to cars after dark with our headlamps!

  • Easy
  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)
  • Mileage: 3.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 50 ft

Meet at the Woodard Bay parking lot by the bridge at 7:30 pm for the slow walk to the bay.  Sunset is at 9:03.  This is when the bats emerge. Plan on spending 20-30 minutes watching the bats before returning to the car by 10pm.

Be sure to have a Discover Pass.

Bring binoculars to watch the cormorants or use our Mountaineers binocs that will be available.

Bring headlamps or flashlights for the walk out.

Dress warmly as we will be sitting out after the sun is gone.

Bat cookies and a warm beverage will be provided.

This hike will be cancelled if it is raining beyond a light drizzle.

It will be high tide so no fun beach combing will be possible.
