7:30 am at Grady Way Park & Ride
Come learn about the amazing world of snow at Mt. Rainier. Snow is fascinating stuff and anything but static. We will start our day at Longmire with a short walk around the meadow and hotsprings, where we will learn about how snow is formed, how it changes over time and what causes avalanches. Then we will head up to Paradise for lunch and a demonstration snowpit where you can get up close and personal with the snowpack. In the afternoon we are scheduled for a 2-hour ranger-lead snowshoe walk in the Paradise area. Snowshoes are provided by the park. You should bring a lunch, water, several warm layers and generally be prepared for cold, snowy weather. The snowshoe walk is about 2 miles round trip and is rated as easy.
