Day Hike - Windy Ridge Lookout

This is the Truman Trail - Pumice Plains. We will explore how nature is bringing back the landscape and wildlife after the 1980 eruption.

  • Easy/Moderate
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 600 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 4,100 ft
  • Pace: 2 mph

This is the hard part. It is a long drive, but looks like it is worth it. To get a general idea, check timing to the Johnston Ridge Observatory, but we will be starting at the Windy Pass TH. If interested, we could car pool from somewhere in the south end. I hope to start the hike at 10:00 am.

Let’s try something new, different. I saw this hike mentioned in a WTA newsletter. I have not done this hike before so let’s explore together. You can find it at their web site under ‘Truman Trail - Pumice Plains’. This is an out and back hike, so we will plan for five hours total on the trail, including a lunch break, and see how far that gets us. We should be back to the TH by 3:00 and then head home. Please don't schedule an afternoon or evening activity as it is hard to predict the timing for this. Vaccinated hikers only and masks if you ride in my car.

A forecast of rain will cancel this hike. I will determine that Friday afternoon.
