Day Hike - Mud Mountain Dam Trails

Explore the rim of the White River Canyon on a forested trail to a viewpoint overlooking the canyon, where we have our lunch, before returning by the same route. We have a nice view of a waterfall across the canyon from a park bench at the halfway point both directions. There are nice, clean restrooms with flush toilets at both the meeting place and the trailhead. Everyone participating in this hike will have the option of a free breakfast before the hike at the Sunbreak Cafe in Auburn.

From the Sunbreak Cafe, we will caravan to the trailhead at Mud Mountain Dam.  The mostly level hike to our lunch spot at an overlook of the canyon is through a combination of evergreen and deciduous forests.  We are usually back to the parking lot around 2:30 PM, at which time we have the option for a short stroll to an overlook of Mud Mountain Dam where there are displays of the history of the dam.  On the drive home, for those so inclined, we can stop at the Enumclaw Starbucks for refreshments.

There is ample parking available at the trailhead, but parking is more limited at the Sunbreak Cafe.  No parking pass is required either place.  After we finish breakfast, cars cannot be left at the Sunbreak Cafe parking lot.  For those wanting to carpool, cars can be left prior to our breakfast at the Auburn Walmart parking lot, the North Auburn Park and Ride lot and the South Federal Way Park and Ride lot.  Those carpooling locations are not on our driving route to the trailhead, and we need to arrive at the trailhead by 9:45 AM to be sure we complete the hike before the gate to the parking lot closes at 3:30 PM.  So we need to leave the Sunbreak Cafe promptly at 9 AM and drive straight to the trailhead.
