White River Campground to Glacier Basin Camp. (M) (USGS Sunrise, GT Mt. Rainier East #270) 7 mi. RT. Gain 1,600’. Hike the first few miles of the second most popular route to Mt. Rainier’s summit. Our path will follow a new trail segment and a converted mining road along the churning glacier-fed White River, through an old growth forest and subalpine and alpine terrain. Part way up, if weather allows, we will see the fantastic Emmons Glacier, the largest in the lower 48 states. Fees: the park charges a $15 entrance fee for private vehicles. Options: annual Mt. Rainier pass ($30), annual Federal Recreational Lands Pass ($80), lifetime Senior Pass ($10), etc. Sign-up closes 8/24/11, 8pm. Contact leader Greg Lovelady, 360-791-6615 (cell), or (preferred).
