  • Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.4 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 2,950 ft
  • Pace: 2.0-2.5 mph

9 AM at the D.O.T. Maintenance Facility TH. Directions: take the Preston,  Exit 22 off I-90. Turn right at the bottom of the freeway ramp (South), then take an immediate right on SE Preston Way.  Follow along for about 0.4-0.5 miles.  The TH is on the left, up the hill a bit behind a chain link fence.  If you have passed the large fenced DOT Maintenance Yard on your left you have gone just a little too far. It is right before this facility.  There is parking along the road on both sides of the street.

We will be following all Mountaineers' Covid-19 protocols. Cloth facemask and hand sanitizer is required. Masks must be worn when within 6 feet of others.

This is a more difficult trip.  Please assess if you are in condition to both complete and enjoy this adventure. Some snow is forecasted for Saturday evening and thus may mean snow travel on the higher sections of the trails.  Microspikes  and trekking poles may be required if conditions dictate. The temperatures will be near freezing at the summits, dress warm in layers and bring a hat and gloves.

Route: Preston Trail to Lower, Middle and then Upper Bootleg Trails to #1, then Poo Top down to Larry's Crossing and Fifteenmile gap.  Then up the TMT (Tiger Mountain Trail) and back over the top of the ridge with a brief detour to #3, continuing on down the TMT, then a right on Lingering Way, another right on Dwight's Way, left on Preston Way and to the TH.  Should be a fun alternative loop. We take snack, view and rest breaks along the trails.  Rob
