Day Hike - West Seattle Loop

After work urban night hike in West Seattle through Schmitz Preserve park, Me-Kwa-Mooks Park and Alki Point with views to Puget Sound and Olympics.

  • Easy
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 4.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 350 ft
  • Pace: 2.2 mph

Meet at Alki Playground/Whale Tail Park near the bathrooms geared up shortly at 5:50 for a 6pm departure.  On street parking. This will be a loop so we will come back to Alki Playground.  Metro #50 looks like a good bet, too.

We will follow David Williams' "Seattle Walks" - Walk #17 West Seattle : Old Growth and Alki Point. This is a loop hike that starts and ends at Alki Playground and  Whale Tail Park.  From the guidebook:

"Trek through the great forest of Schmitz Preserve Park, get unparalleled views out to Puget Sound, stroll along the water, and end by passing the birthplace of Seattle ."     And...   "The walk traverses a one-third mile dirt path in Schmitz Preserve Park. The path can be muddy and requires crossing a narrow creek (two feet wide) on flat rocks. The walk has a few short steep sections up the Schmitz Preserve Park trail and one long descent on a sidewalk. Public restrooms are available near the beginning of the walk, but that’s about it."

I've done this  stroll through the park several times.  Good tread helps if that short dirt section is a bit muddy. Downtown Seattle streets are much steeper.
