Day Hike - Vesper Peak

We will not be going to the peak. The actual destination is Vesper Lake, a tiny lake in a beautiful setting between Vesper and Sperry Peaks. We will take the Sunrise Mine Trail to Headlee Pass and then make our way over to the lake.

We will start out from the Sunrise Mine Trailhead and immediately enter a forest with a few challenging creek crossings before breaking out into a valley. As we climb switchbacks, Big Four comes into view. Before long, we break into a valley of avalanche debris, sparse trees, and lots of rocks and boulders before finally heading up a head-spinning couloir chock full of sharp switchbacks. At last, come to Headless Pass. Pass down beneath a canopy of trees before breaking out into a rock strewn area that will have you thinking the end of the world as you cross the ankle-twisting rock pile that would have kept Fred and Barney employed for years. At last, break free into a fragile area of ground cover alongside Vesper Creek. Huge boulders offer tempting resting places as you reach the edge of Vesper Lake, with Sperry and Vesper Peaks standing guard.
