6:00 at Maple Vly P&R
This hike covers one of the most magnificent sections of the Wonderland trail, and its highest point at Panhandle Gap. We will start by shuttling vehicles to the endpoint at Box Canyon on the Stevens Canyon road, then return to the TH off the White River CG access road. From the TH at 3900', we'll climb to Summerland's flower fields and close-in views of the Mountain (6300'). From there we traverse the talus and possible snowfields to Panhandle Gap (7200') and then down-down-down to the amazing bowl of Ohanapecosh Park and Indian Bar (5000'). We then climb steeply back up to the Cowlitz Divide (5900') and follow the divide nearly 5 miles with glorious views of the peaks south and Rainier to the immediate west. We'll take the Wonderland junction right at the Olallie Creek trail jct and follow it down to the Box Canyon and our vehicles. Because of the distance, elevation gain and shorter days of Sept, this trip is for fit hikers who are able to maintain a 2-3 mph average pace with few rest stops. Trekking poles are strongly recommended to save the knees onn the steep downhills. Because Rainier creates her own weather any time of year, raingear and warm, non-cotton layers are a must. More details of carpooling will be worked out as the date approaches. Because of the vehicle shuttle we will need 4-6 vehicles and drivers; all driving will be on very good paved roads.
