Day Hike - Sugarloaf

This is a scenic loop hike through the ACFL. We will start at Heart Lake, take some of the less used trails through forest lands, circumnavigate Whistle Lake and, hopefully, enjoy San Juan Island, Puget Sound and Olympic Mountain views from the summit of Sugarloaf.

Take I-5 North to exit 230 in Burlington. Turn left at the exit onto Hwy 20 westbound. Drive 11.7 to the Hwy 20 spur signal (circle). Turn left on Hwy 20 and drive 1.8 miles to Campbell Lake Rd. Turn right and drive 1.5 miles to Heart Lake Road. In 1.5 miles you will pass a parking area for Mt Erie on your right then see Heart Lake on your left. The parking lot is on your left and clearly marked. There is a porta potty. No parking pass is required.

We will depart from the Heart Lake parking lot at 10:00a. Please arrive s few minutes early and be ready to hike.

Our 8 mile route includes lots of up and down and a few steep climbs. We will hike at a brisk 2 1/2 mph pace then take time for lunch at Whistle Lake. We will stop again at the summit of Sugarloaf for a snack and photos. On a clear day the views are outstanding and eagles have been spotted on several recent outings.

The trail is in good condition but there are muddy spots on multi use sections.
