8:00 AM at Stonerose Interpretive Center (Republic)

Mountaineers members only. This activity is limited to adults 18 & over. Minimum 4 participants.

Note: optional geo/nature hike destination change to Kettle Crest and Curlew Lake State Park, from Freezeout Ridge.

Email leader with your carpool preferences to drive (# passengers) and/or ride, carpool meet location, and when you can depart on Friday. Will return to Seattle/Everett Sunday evening.

Please be sure to review info on Stonerose website, including recommended gear to bring or rent (at Interp Ctr) for fossil dig. Website indicates specific tools that can be rented on site.

Hand or magnifying lens (4-10x power) recommended or sharing for close-up views of fossils, lichens and other botany details. Bring binoculars for birding opportunities, enroute and at Curlew Lake State Park. Leader will have geology hikes, rock/mineral, botany, bird and Stonerose fossil guidebooks to share.

Stonerose fees: $8/day with reduced fees for seniors. $5/day for equipment rental. Travel time recommendations:
Suggested departure from Seattle/Everett area on Friday, mid-day or earlier. Drive time from Everett to Republic, approx 5-1/2 hrs, via hwy 2/97 or hwy 20/Mt Vernon. Faster drive option via hwy 90 & 97N to Tonasket, and 20E to Republic.

Camp or motel lodging recommended Friday and Saturday evenings in Republic / Curlew Lake area. Trip leader expects to depart Everett 9/20 noon via hwy 20, camping Fri & Sat nights at Curlew Lake State Park (approx 9 mi from Republic, plenty of available sites, reservable or drop in).

Lodging options:

Leader will be doing recon trip 8/31-9/2, departing Everett early AM 8/31, to Stonerose Fossil Beds & naturalist hikes to Freezeout Ridge with potential nearby sites, camping at Curlew Lake State Park. Naturalist study group members should contact leader if interested in rendezvousing at Stonerose on 8/31 12:30p or 9/1 AM.
