Day Hike - Seven Lakes Basin & High Divide

This is a long and challenging day hike of 19 miles and 4000'. We'll travel through old growth forests, past lakes, and through alpine meadows to a high point overlooking the Hoh and Mt. Olympus, and then continue the loop via a different trail.

  • Strenuous/Very Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 19.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 5,700 ft
  • Pace: Moderate but steady

We will meet at a small Church P&R (signed P&R) at 148th and 1st NE in Shoreline and just west of I-5 at 5:35 AM. This will allow us to make the 6:10 Kingston Ferry.

You will need to be vaccinated to carpool.

This highly scenic hike is a bit more strenuous than the mileage alone would indicate because of numerous water bars and many rocky sections of trail. It took me about 9-1/2 to 10 hours last year with some stops. We will start by hiking up the Soleduck for about seven miles and will descend via Deer Lake. It may be possible to climb Bogachiel Peak along the way but that adds to the hike.

I suspect that in most areas wildflowers will be past peak but will still be good in wet areas. There is also a great display of Olympic Aster along the way that the leader expects to appreciate and photograph for about 1/2 hour. Another highlight is an active fault on the High Divide that splits the trail and requires a bit of low grade scrambling (no exposure) to negotiate.

Be sure to bring adequate water and carry a pump, etc. to be able to replenish in a few isolated locations.

The hike is described at WTA.org but we will do it in a clockwise direction. https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/seven-lakes-basin
