This trip was originally posted as a clockwise loop but over the winter I hiked it counterclockwise which is much easier on the knees for the descent.  We will begin hiking on the famed Wonderland Trail and turn onto the Rampart Ridge Loop after a short distance.  The ascent through forest is beautiful with some views of Eagle Peak across the valley and a bubbling creek.  As we approach the ridge top and gaze back, an unobstructed view of Mt. Rainier greets you on a clear day.  We will break at the ridge top to soak up some sun and Rainier views on the boulders while we have a bite to eat.  Refreshed, get your eyes and ears ready for the ridge walk through the forest where on several past trips, a grouse could be heard nearby.  Wildflower lovers will delight in seeing striped coralroot and ghost pipes if the timing is right. We will stop briefly at the viewpoint looking down on Longmire and descend to met up with the short but worth it side trip on the Trail of the Shadows for our cool down.  The loop will be completed by passing by an old homestead cabin and my favorite little hot spring.
