Family Activities is going to try a Letterboxing trip! What is letterboxing, you might wonder? From the Letterboxing.org website: “Letterboxing is an intriguing pastime combining artistic ability with treasure-hunts in parks, forests, and cities around the world. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by cracking codes and following clues. The prize: an image from a miniature piece of art known as a rubber stamp—usually a unique, hand-carved creation. Letterboxers stamp their discoveries in a personal journal, then use their own rubber stamp, called a signature stamp, to stamp into the letterbox's logbook.” The clues for this trip can be found here: http://www.atlasquest.com/boxes/clue/?gBoxId=192284 if you want to read them ahead. I’ll bring a few copies of the clues so we can figure them out together with everyone’s help, or you could print them and bring your own copy too. Please dress for the weather, wear comfy walking shoes, and bring your own snacks & drinks in addition to the letterboxing items your family needs (own rubber stamp, “journal”, etc.). You’ll need to bring some of your own items along to fully participate in the letterboxing experience. See the list of items at the Letterboxing.org website: http://www.letterboxing.org/GettingStarted/getstart_finding.htm Because the creator of this letterboxing adventure did not mention the distance covered and/or time needed to find all 8 boxes (I don’t know how far we’ll end up walking or how long this will take…), I’m going to recommend this trip for ages 4/5 and up. If there’s time and energy left after finding the boxes, those who want to could head to the park beach or playground after the letterboxing. Parking: This series begins at the RUSTIC PICNIC AREA (park here) on the Five Mile Drive, at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma. Once you've parked, you'll need to walk across the road to the RHODODENDRON GARDEN. Head towards the blue METRO PARKS sign.....and begin! We’ll meet at the Metro Parks sign at 1:30. Hopefully parking will not be an issue, but if the parking at the Rustic Picnic are is full, you’ll need to loop around and come back thru the park entrance again and try parking at the playground/main picnic area parking lot, which would mean a short walk to get to the Rhododendron Garden. This will be my family’s first time trying a letterboxing trip so this will be an adventure!
