This day hike is part of the July 10-11 La Wis Wis Car Camp, involving day hiking to Deer and Sand Lakes on Saturday, camping Saturday night at La Wis Wis Campground, and  day hiking to Packwood Lake on Sunday.  Registration for the car camp is by registering for the two related day hikes.  Anyone registering for one of the day hikes must also register for the other one, and participate in the Saturday night encampment.  Compliance is monitored by requiring leader permission for the two car camps.  Complete information about the car camp is on the Tacoma Branch Events Calendar.

Sunday morning we will have a camp breakfast at La Wis Wis campground, break camp and drive to the Packwood Lake trailhead, involving heading south on SR 12, turning left at Snyder Road and continuing to the trailhead parking lot at the end of the road.  Each car parked there must display a Northwest Forest Pass or National Park Pass.  There is a restroom at the parking lot.  The hike to Packwood Lake is on a well maintained trail with a gentle grade, mostly under a forest canopy.  The route gains 1.200 feet on the hike in and 300 feet on the hike out.  At the half way point each direction, we stop by a small waterfall for a rest break.  After our lunch at the lake, there will be an opportunity for a swim in the lake, weather permitting.  Due to the lake's relatively low elevation, its water is warm this time of year.

On the drive home, there will be an opportunity for a refreshment stop at a restaurant in Packwood, eating outdoors if the pandemic has not ended, and indoors if it has.
