Day Hike - Packwood Lake

Experience one of the most populr hikes in the Goat Rocks Wilderness, hiking through a forest canopy to a magnificent lake, with views of Mt. Rainier enroute. If the weather permits, time will be allowed during the lunch break to swim in the lake, which tends to be warm at this time of the year, due to its low elevation.

Meet at 9 AM at the Mountain Goat Coffee Shop, 105 Main St. E,  Packwood, located on SR 12 near the center of town.  For most people, the fastest driving route is through Enumclaw on SR 410, right at Cayuse Pass onto SR 123, right on SR 12 at the T junctiona dnd left at Main St. in Packwood.  From Olympia, go south on I-5, east on SR 12 and right at Main St, in Packwood.

We will caravan from the Mountain Goat Coffee Shop to the trailhead parking lot, by heading north on SR 12, right at Snyder Road and continuing several miles to the end of the road, where the trailhead parking lot is located.  There is a restroom there.  Cars parked there must display the Northwest Forest Pass or a National Park Pass.

Our hike to Packwood Lake will gradually gain 1200 feet on a good trail in the first two miles and then  gradually decline 300 feet to the lake, all through a forest canopy.  We stop for lunch and a possible swim at the north end of the lake.  The outhouse there has been closed down, so we will need to take bathroom breaks in the woods.  We return by the same route.

On the drive home we customarily have a meal stop at a restaurant in Packwood.
