Day Hike - Northern State Ghost Town

Spring is a wonderful time to explore the Northern State Recreation Area, a Skagit County Park near Sedro-Woolley. This easy hike winds through lovely meadows and wooded areas with bridge crossings of Hansen and Hilltop Creeks. Despite the name, there's no ghost town — but there is a rich history: this is the former site of the Northern State Mental Hospital farm, which closed in 1973. Come see what early spring has in store!

Welcome! We're looking forward to exploring Northern State Recreation Area with you.

We'll wander through open meadows and forested sections, crossing Hansen and Hilltop Creeks along the way. April is an exciting time to visit — we'll be discovering together what spring looks like out here!

The trail is a mix of gravel paths, mowed grass, and some sections that may be muddy in early spring. Waterproof footwear is recommended.

Please look at the stated hike description, distance, pace, and elevation gain and consider your current fitness level in determining if this hike is a good fit for you. If you have any questions, please contact me in advance of the hike.

Hiking is better together. My goal is to get everyone out and back safely while we enjoy the trail at a comfortable pace. No race, no rush

After the hike, we'll gather for an optional lunch at a nearby restaurant.

More information to come in your Hello Hiker email!

We will meet at 8:30 AM at 25625 Helmick Road, Sedro-Woolley. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. Plan to arrive early enough to use the facilities and gear up so that we are ready to hit the trail at 8:30.
