This is the second of 6-day hikes in the Redwoods National and State Park from March 25-30. The trails are designed to showcase the best views, trees, waterfalls, geology and history that this park has to offer. The weather should be mild, but some rain can be expected.
Pace will be moderate, with plenty of time for taking in the scenery.
Here is the proposed route for this hike: https://www.gaiagps.com/public/FgmAU4GEPV3sr4xSwClUrIud/
Note: This is a one-way hike and will require a car shuttle.
The Klamath Section of the Coastal Trail winds north, hugging the coast about the steep Pacific shoreline, to Hidden Beach. Home to some of the best ocean views in the Redwood National Park, and sightings of whales and seabirds.
Yurok Loop encompasses stellar examples of coastal scrub forest plants, which include Sitka spruce, Douglas-fir, cow parsnip, wild cucumber, coltsfoot, yarrow, and many varieties of berries. Take binoculars to view seabirds (cormorants, pigeon guillemots, brown pelicans, and common murres) on the seastacks (big rocks left behind by erosion).
In the late afternoon, we will take advantage of the low tide and walk to Endert's beach (1mi) and explore the tide pools.
Redwood National Park does not charge entrance fees, but Jedediah Smith, Del Norte Coast, and Prairie Creek Redwoods state parks collect day-use fees at developed campground entrance stations. These three California State Parks will honor the federal "America the Beautiful" pass.
Participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging, although carpooling options to the trailhead can be arranged. Lodging options will be discussed with participants but could include individual hotel rooms in Crescent city or a shared Airbnb. Nearby airports include Eureka/Arcata (about 30mi) or Medford,OR (100mi). Leader plans to fly into Medford on Mar 24 and rent a car. There will be options for dining together and sharing free time activities.
My style: I am adventurous, curious and love to be "awed" by Nature. As a leader, I tend to the quieter side and my style is more relaxed. While I love to hike, I am also willing to make space for picture-taking, flowers, critters, geology, culture and views along the way. I value the journey as much as the destination and strive to foster hiking as a wholistic experience (body, soul, spirit).
Meet at the Klamath River Overlook at 9am. Directions sent to participants
