Mt. Ellinor, Lower trailhead (S) (GT:#167, Mt. Steel; USGS Mt. Washington, Mt. Steel) 7.2 mi., 3244’gain; highest point 5944’. Hike first mile on gentle forested trail with occasional views of nearby peaks. Then climb steeply for a good workout with non-stop scenery. Your final reward is one of the best summit views in the Olympics, topped off with shimmering Lake Cushman below. Possible close encounters with mountain goats. Moderate pace.
