Day Hike - Mount Si Old Trail

A fun loop hike ascending Mount Si on the Old trail with a descent down the Main trail and following a traverse via the Douglas Fir trail and Boulder Garden Loop trail back to the trailhead. See leader notes below for a complete route description.

8am  Little Si trailhead parking lot     Discover Pass Required

Take Exit 32 off of I-90 just east of North Bend. Turn left, crossing over I-90, and follow 468th Ave NE to SE North Bend Way and turn left.  Turn right onto SE Mount Si Road and then left into the Little Si parking lot shortly after crossing the bridge across the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River.

COVID -19   Following the Mountaineer’s protocol all hikers are required to have face masks and hand sanitizer.  This is a Phase 2 hike and we will wear masks when at the trailhead, stopping on the trail and when passing other hikers or being passed.  We will maintain social distance at 6 feet the best that we can and all are encouraged to wear masks as much as possible.  Group size is limited to 6.

The Mountaineers do not recommend carpooling with anyone outside your household at this time.

ROUTE:  We will follow the Little Si trail for a short distance to the upper leg of the Boulder Garden Loop trail junction, then follow the Boulder Garden Loop trail to the Mt Si Old trail and take it to the Mt Si Main trail just below the summit at which point we will then gain the summit.  On the descent we will hike down the Mt Si Main trail for roughly 2.7 miles at which point we will take the Douglas Fir and lower leg of the Boulder Garden Loop trails back to the trailhead.  The hike will be to the view points on the main summit areas and does not include a scramble up the Haystack.

The total distance is 8 miles with significant elevation gain (3,300 ft).  On the ascent a few portions of the Mt Si Old trail are fairly steep.  Much steeper than the Mt Si Main trail but not as difficult as the old trail on Mailbox Peak.  Please be sure you are okay with this before registering.    

While it will be a good workout I am not calling it a conditioner only because we will hike at a moderate but steady pace (2-2.25 mph) with minimal breaks and adjust pace accordingly with the objective of keeping the group together.

Micro-spikes are required since there is often snow on the upper part of the mountain in January.  I’ll send an email a couple days before the hike with expected weather and trail conditions.

This hike is dependent on the weather.  It will be a go even if intermittent light rain and drizzle but will be rescheduled if the weather becomes extreme.
