Trip

Day Hike - Mount Fremont Lookout

Nice hike to Fremont Lookout from Sunrise Visitor Center at Mount Rainier

  • Easy/Moderate
  • Easy
  • Mileage: 5.6 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,200 ft
  • Pace: 1.75-2

From the Sunrise Visitor Center, we will hike west on the Sourdough Ridge Trail to the Frozen Lake junction, then  heading uphill past Frozen Lake to the lookout where we will have views of Grand Park, Redstone Peak, Skyscraper Mountain and Berkeley Park. Be on the lookout for mountain goats and black bears in Grand Park.

Relatively easy 5.6 hike, at a moderate pace (1.75-2 mph) with plenty of rest breaks as needed.  Stops to look at the views and flowers along the way. There's very little shade here, so bring plenty of water and good sun protection.

Here is the trip description from WTA:  Fremont Lookout — Washington Trails Association

Bring lunch and plenty of water and sturdy hiking shoes. Trekking poles will be helpful.

My goals and expectations for this trip are:

1. Safety, including staying together as a group

2. Enjoy nature and have fun

3. Respectful conversation

4. Follow Leave No Trace principles

5. Assessment of your ability to hike this distance/elevation gain/pace

Meet at the Sunrise Visitor Center at 11:45  am

Note:  You will need a National Park Pass and a timed entry for either the 9am or 11am time slot, available here: Mount Rainier National Park Timed Entry Reservations - Recreation.gov

(as of the time of this listing there were still 63 spots open for 11)

Leader has a permit for 9am slot and can take 3 other people.  I am camping at Silver Springs the night before.  We only need one or two other people to get permits as long as meet-ups/carpools can be arranged.
