Day Hike - Monte Cristo

Come hike into spooky season with me as we explore the Monte Cristo Ghost Town out on the Mountain Loop Hwy

  • Easy/Moderate
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 800 ft
  • Pace: 1.5-2.0

Please meet at the trailhead parking lot, ready for introduction by 9:30am so we can hit the trail together right after. For those wishing to decrease cars and increase connection, please review good carpooling practices: https://www.mountaineers.org/activities/activity-overviews/good-carpooling-practices

This spooky season hike is an out-and-back trail mostly along an old road to a mining ghost town.

We will settle in to hike at an easy to moderate pace (1.5-2.0) to meet participant needs and be social, but also keep us moving to stay warm and reach our destination of Monte Cristo.

Our main snack break/lunch will be at the picnic tables at the Monte Cristo site. Length will be dependent on weather and group comfort, but also allowing time for exploration of the relics and interpretive signs.

Hike Rating: While this is a relatively flat hike at a more relaxed pace, I've listed it as moderate because there is no potable water, AND there may be a log crossing this time of year depending on water levels. It is also 8 miles roundtrip.

Please Note: This is a water carry hike--There is no potable water source; filtering is not recommended due to heavy metals left from mining operations making the water unsafe. Please bring enough water for your needs and trip conditions.

Restroom: vault toilet at Barlow trailhead parking lot

Pass Required: NW Forest Pass

More details will be sent in the Hello Hiker email after registration closes, including details of the hike and directions to the trailhead.
