Magnuson Park

Day Hike - Magnuson Park

We will be looking and listening for both migratory and resident birds in breeding plumage as they seek potential mates and set up territories for nesting. Bring binoculars; field guides are optional. Bring your smartphone or tablet with the Merlin App and use it to practice identifying species.

Meet at 8:00 AM in Magnuson Park at the "Park and Ride Magnuson Frog Pond" (GPS recognizes this location) that is off of 65th street just near the bottom of the hill opposite the Western Fisheries Research Center. If you go as far as the fork in the road or the boat ramp area, you have gone too far.

Expect to spend 2-3 hours wandering the trails, looking for birds and listening to their calls. We wil practice looking at key characteristics like shape, size, color patterns, and behaviors. The merlin app may be helpful in identifying species and a bird book either hard copy or as an app will give more information.

Species easily seen in May in Seward Park, Mont Lake Fill, or Discovery Park, based on lists from May over several years. Likely to be seen most anywhere in neighborhood parks in Puget Sound area. Thanks for the data to Study Group Members Monya Noelke and Nancy Kirkner.
