From I-5: Take the Woodland exit/Exit 21. Follow State Route 503 east for 29 miles to Cougar. Continue east on SR 503, which becomes Forest Road (FR) 90, for 18.5 miles, At the junction with FR 25, turn right onto FR 90/Lewis River Road. Drive 5.1 miles east on FR 90 to its junction with FR 9039. Turn left and continue 1 mile, crossing the Lewis River, to the signed trailhead on the left.
This trip was postponed from December 2nd due to lack of participants and winter storm.
*Leaders Permission Required*. Due to the length of this hike, I will be looking for participants who have hiked 12+ mile days in the last season and can maintain a 2-2.5 mph pace. It is also important to me that hikers are interested in working together, hiking with others, and have a positive attitude geared toward hiking in a group.
Though there is no major climbing on this hike and we will lose more elevation than we gain it is 14 miles and quite a bit of cumulative up and down. We will hike at a 2-2.5 mph pace, but will still take plenty of breaks and hike to the pace of the slowest member of the group. Mountaineers expects everyone to be an active participant in route finding. We will aim to return to the trailhead by 4pm but given the short daylight participants should carry a headlamp just in case.
There will likely be quite a bit of mud on the trail. Consider bringing hiking poles for balance and rain pants. We will go rain or shine and I will only cancel if there is snow or flooding forecasted.
We will shuttle cars from the Curly Falls to Quartz Creek Trailhead. Each car should have a NW Forest Pass.
