Lena Lake

Day Hike - Lena Lake

Join me for a classic Olympics hike to lower Lena Lake. We will take some time to identify plants and mushrooms along the way.

COVID-19: Learn about our most up-to-date guidance for participants and leaders on our COVID-19 Response page. All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before participating in this Mountaineers activity.

  • Mileage: 6.8 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,600 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 2,000 ft
  • Pace: 1.5-2.0

We will meet at the Tukwilla Park and Ride at 7:00 a.m. We will divvy up for carpools and head out by 7:15, arriving by 9:15. Drivers will need a Northwest Forest Pass or a National Parks America the Beautiful Pass.

Directions from WTA: From Hoodsport, drive travel north on Hwy 101 for 14 miles. Make a left onto Hamma Hamma River Road at milepost 318. Continue for 7.5 paved miles to the trailhead, which can accommodate about 30 cars. A privy is available at the trailhead.

Help me scout out Lena Lake, a hike I have long wanted to do in the Olympics.  Here is the description from WTA: https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/lena-lake. (Please note the WTA description clocks this hike at 7.2 miles, the Mountaineers clocks it at 6, and Green Trails clocks it at 6.8 if we go to the end of the lake. My guess is well be closer to 6.8.)

We will take some time to identify mushrooms and plants along the way, but we will keep an overall pace of 1.5-2.0 mph. (In other words, feel free to bring your camera, but we're not going to stop a whole lot as we want to get back before dark.) You should have hiked a hike of equivalent distance and elevation in the past,

If light rain is forecast, the hike is on. If heavy rain is forecast, I will reschedule.  Be sure to bring good rain gear. (It is the Olympics, after all.)
