Exploratory. Please ignore 100 hikes in nw Oregon book in the description -- this is in the San Juan Islands in Washington. Map: USGS Mt. Constitution Elevation Gain (in feet): 2500 (cumulative) Event Length (in miles): 12.5 Land Designation: Moran State Park [Orcas Island] Permits Required: None, although you'll need $$ for the ferry. Book: Loop trip taken from hikes 30, 31, 33, and 35 in Hiking the San Juan Islands (Ken Wilcox) Bring Ferry Fare: $38.85 car+driver, $11.85 per additional person. Extra cost for the car to be split evenly amongst those in the car; don't expect the driver to carry a lot of change.;=1&arrivingterm;=15 Note: The return trip home is at no additional charge. Meeting Place 1: Brickyard Park & Ride [I-405 160th st exit, go west, take a left into the Park&Ride; just west of the freeway], carpool and leave at 6:45am, so plan to be there a few minutes earlier. Optional Meeting Place: The plan is to take the 8:45am ferry out of Anacortes to Orcas Island. Anacortis Terminal information: Trip itinerary: Start out at cascade lake, ascend steeply to hidden ridge, then east to cold spring, and north to the summit of Mt. Constitution, a good place to stop for lunch. From there we'll start out north as we descend and walk southward along the east shore of Mountain Lake. From there we'll head back west amidst old growth, waterfalls, and wind up back at cascade lake. Suggestion: Bring something (leave in car) to munch on for dinner while we wait for the return ferry. This trip promises to be one of the best trips in the San Juan Islands, and because of the ferry cost isn't offered very frequently. If the weather is nice, we'll get fantastic views. If the weather is questionable, we'll still get a lot of great exercise, waterfalls, lakes, some big trees, and island wildlife.
