From the book, 100 Hikes in Washington's Alpine Lakes: Driving the highway to Stevens Pass, look up. But look back to the road quick, before you smash up. Pull off on a shoulder to study in detail the mile-high north wall of 5991-foot Mt. Index. Trace the white ribbon streaking the forested lower cliffs. Where does the water come from? What's up there, unseen? Well, you've just got to go up and take a look. We go rain, shine, snow, hell or high water, so please be prepared.
