This hike is off Route 2 at milepost 35 near Index in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Lake Serene is nestled at the bottom of towering 5,991 Mount Index, which dominates the southern skyline on the that part of the highway up to Steven's Pass. At the far end of the lake, the peaks rise straight up over 2,000 feet. We may even hear late-season avalanche rumblings in the safe distance. The trail up consists of switchbacks...and a number of helpful stairways. On the way up or back we will detour 1/2 mile to the stunning Bridal Veil Falls, where water pours off of Mount Index in four parts, each descending 100 to 200 feet along Bridal Veil Creek. Pace will be slow-to-moderate to accommodate phototaking and just a bit of naturalist looking-around time.
