Day Hike - Kautz Creek

Indian Henry Hunting Grounds with meadows, historic cabin, and fabulous views of Rainier is the goal. We will hike from Longmire counter clockwise on the Rampart Ridge trail and turn toward Indian Henry Hunting Grounds from that trail. The total hike in and out will be 12.6 miles with a 2,500 foot elevation gain. It will be a moderately paced hike with an eye toward enjoying plants and views along the way. (One note: depending on the site you use, the hike is listed from 12 miles to 14 miles, and 2,400 ft elevation gain to 3,200 feet elevation gain. I used Dan Nelson's book "Day Hiking Mt Rainier" for my data.)

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 14.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,100 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 5,300 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph

The group will meet at Martin Way Park and Ride at 6:00 am on Aug 28 and form carpools there.   Otherwise we will meet at 8:00 at Longmire on the east side  of the parking lot near the bathrooms.

This hike is intended for Mountaineers who have attended the conditioning class of the Olympia Mountaineers, but other hikers capable of a 12.6 miles and 2,500 ft elevation gain day will be welcome.  Day Hiking Mount Rainier by Dan Nelson writes Indian Henrys Hunting Ground is the favorite hunting ground of Indian Henry (surprise!).   Meadows surround an old historic cabin in the Hunting Ground which are wonderfully diverse in both flora and fauna and provide glorious views of Mt Rainier and lesser summits Copper Mountain, Pyramid Peak, and Iron Mountain.
