Eric Aug. 16 Sat.- Johnston Ridge – S. Coldwater Creek, MSHNVM (VS)(GT 332 Spirit Lake) This is a key exchange hike for distance hikers wanting an aerobic day through the geologic fun in the Mt. St. Helens blast zone. There are 2 routes. One starts at Johnston Ridge and the other starts at S. Coldwater Creek. Both are challenging but the S. Coldwater Ck will have plenty of gain. Our scouting found we will spend 2/3 of the trip on unmaintained trails. Expect several large blow downs, 2 slides, narrow loose trail all with some long streches of exposure. Route stats Johnston Ridge to Coldwater Peak to Coldwater Ck, 12.6 mi rt, 2200 gain, 3630 descent - Strenous Coldwater Creek, to Coldwater Peak to Johnston Ridge - 12.6 mi. rt, 3630 gain, 2200 descent. - Very Strenous Highlights include Mt.
