Day Hike - Iron Goat Trail
Wellington was one of the worst railroad disasters in the nations history and also the most tragic snow avalanche. There are interpretive signs, relics, and old tunnels to see. Last year's hike had lots of butterflies and flowers. We will hike together as a group, nobody gets left behind.

Monroe Park and Ride 7:30 AM. Northwest Forest Pass required at the trailhead.
We will start at the Wellington trailhead and hike to Windy Point. By starting at the Wellington trailhead, we avoid the steep switchbacks. The trail has a very gradual incline and decline that is barely noticeable. The trail will cross through dark forest groves and brushy avalanche slopes. Wellington still has the old tunnel that went through the Cascade Crest before the rail line was rerouted in 1929. The Iron Goat Trail is full of history. Here is a link to more information about the history of the trail. http://www.irongoattrail.org/history.html
There is a short section where we hike on a ledge next to the tunnel. It is wide enough to walk easily with plenty of traction. Exposure is minimal. If you are concerned, let me know. I can forward you a picture.
There have been bear sightings in the area. I have checked with the Skykomish Ranger Station, they have not been aggressive. This link has more information on hiking in bear country. https://www.wta.org/go-outside/trail-smarts/how-to/hike-backpack-bear-country
