6:30 AM at Mt. Si Trailhead
If you are enrolling in the 2011 intermediate climbing course at Tacoma you have leader permission to sign up for this activity. Elevation gain is 3,500 feet and round trip is 8 miles. It is not a race but the intent is for all students to reach the top meeting point in less than 2 hours. There is no time limit on the descent. Bring a headlamp as it will be dark at first. Meet at the trailhead at 6:30 promptly for sign in and weigh in. Trip will leave promptly at 7:00 to begin conditioning test. Required equipment are a 35 pounds minimum pack weight, fully lugged boots suitable for crampons, 10 essentials, crampons and/or Yaktrax for ice or the trail, trekking poles and/or ice axes. Trail may be compacted snow and ice in the upper portion. Bring all weather gear and food to share at the stopping point on top. Extra dry clothes useful to change for the descent may be useful. There is no weight requirement on the descent so you can bring some weight as water that can be dumped at the top.
