This hike is in the Johnston Ridge Observatory area of Mt. St. Helens. Come explore the amazing comeback the area is making, 30 years after the eruption. The trail wanders through colorful hummocks, past small ponds, and up and along a ridge overlooking a area where elk are frequently present. After our hike, we'll stop off at nearby Coldwater Lake for a close up look at a beautiful lake formed during the eruption. There is a great picnic area here, so bring a picnic lunch or snack. Leader will bring a cooler with ice; feel free to bring an extra bottle of water, soft drink, or juice to be chilling while we hike. There should be extra room in the cooler for small perishable lunch items, too. NW Forest pass OR an interagency pass such as a National Parks pass required. Leader has a National Parks pass, which will admit me plus 3 others. If you have a valid pass, please bring it with you. Call me if you have questions about the passes/fee.
