Gothic Basin

Day Hike - Gothic Basin

A strenuous hike to one of the PNW's gems. Gothic Basic is a beautiful lake and alpine area with beautiful views that will make you wish you backpacked (until you have to carry that weight up the 3000 foot elevation gain!)

COVID-19: Learn about our most up-to-date guidance for participants and leaders on our COVID-19 Response page. All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before participating in this Mountaineers activity.
  • Strenuous, Moderate/Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 9.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,100 ft

We'll determine carpool locations once everyone's registered, but either Monroe, Lake Stevens or Granite Falls P&R's will be used to consolidate cars as the trailhead parking is limited.

Our goal will be to be at the trailhead by 9.

Trailhead Directions (approximately one hour from Granite Falls):

Take Highway 92 to its end in Granite Falls. At the T intersection near the east end of town, turn left onto the Mountain Loop Highway. Follow this road 11 miles to the Verlot Ranger Station for maps, permits, and latest trail information. 19.3 miles past the ranger station is Barlow Pass and the end of paved road. Here you will find a parking lot on the left (north) side of the road.

Parking is available both on the road and at a Forest Service trailhead parking lot near the end of the paved road. Restrooms are available here as well.

This is a beautiful trip, but challenging.  It involves both significant elevation gain and a trail that at times is more of a scramble.  To register, you must have completed multiple moderate or strenuous level trips with similar elevation gain that demonstrate your fitness level.  There is significant opportunity to explore once at the basin so mileage may increase depending on group preferences.

We will travel at a moderate pace, but be prepared for a workout!
