  • Very Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 16.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,200 ft

The Group will leave at 7 a.m. from the back of the Top Foods parking lot in west Olympia (near Pier 1 Imports). You can Google 1313 Cooper Point Road SW, Olympia, WA 98502

Let’s head up to Gladys Divide this Thursday during what looks like it may be a clear or at least non-rainy day. The current forecast calls for rain the night before and the day after our hike.

As of last weekend there is no snow during the first 7.5 miles to Flapjack Lakes. A few parts of the 1.5 miles from the lakes to the divide have patches of snow. I’ll be bringing my trekking poles and might toss in my MicroSPIKES. Total elevation gain is 4,150. The lakes are great and the last mile to the divide is amazing.

Pace will be moderate and steady. I have listed the day as challenging just because it’s an 18 mile round trip with some fairly steep switchbacks and 4,150 feet of vertical gain. I’ll have my harmonica handy in case of bears (though deer and goats have been more common during some of my previous hikes this way).

Please remember to bring your 10 Essentials and carpool money for the driver(s). The weather may not clear until after we start so be prepared with gear for our sometimes wet Washington "sunshine."

Three competing forecasts include: 1. Weather Underground for Hoodsport which shows a clear window starting in the morning and continuing past sunset (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=Hoodsport%2C+WA ), 2. Mountain-forecast.com which shows about the same thing with less detail (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=Hoodsport%2C+WA), and 3. National Weather Service which is the least positive at a 30% chance of rain during the entire day (http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=sew&smap=1&textField1=47.52&textField2=-123.34#.U6kswfldWrg).
