Day Hike - Excelsior Ridge (East High Divide Trail)

Day Hike - Excelsior Ridge (East High Divide Trail)

On this strenuous dayhike we'll climb 88 switchbacks and 2400 feet to Welcome Pass and continue along one of the most gorgeous flowerfield traverses in the state ! After 6.5 miles and a short walk up 5,699-foot Excelsior Mountain, we'll head down 4 more miles on the knee-jarring Excelsior Ridge Trail to the trailhead.

COVID-19: Learn about our most up-to-date guidance for participants and leaders on our COVID-19 Response page. All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before participating in this Mountaineers activity.

To Be Determined based on participants' location and carpooling plans.

We will drop off a car (or more) at the Excelsior trailhead (end of the trip) and drive the group to the Welcome  Pass trailhead, with the aim to start hiking by no later than 9:30AM.  Trailhead locations shown at

This is one of the best meadow and ridge walks in the state!  But also one that must be earned with 2500' of elevation gain in the first 3 miles!  Leader permission is requested in order to ensure that everyone on the trip is capable of completing it successfully and safely.  Please request to join only if you have successfully completed another hike of similar distance and gain at a 2-2.5 mph pace in the past month or so.

Because a car shuttle is required, we will need at least two drivers.  Please register for this hike only if you are sure you can go, because cancellations are a huge pain on these more complicated shuttle hikes.

The leader will send out emails the week before the hike to assist with carpool and gear planning.  Those who don't want to get up early may want to consider staying at the Mt Baker Lodge the night before, just a short ways further on highway 542.
