  • Very Strenuous
  • Mileage: 18.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 6,500 ft
6:30AM at Snow Lake trailhead
This is a trip any hiker MUST do at least once in their lifetime! We can hope to see the jeweled lakes of the Enchantments ringed by bright yellow alpine larches coming into their full color. We will decide which end of the trip to start on based on the likelihood of ice on Aasgard pass and upper Enchantments. If weather is favorable we will meet at Snow Lake trailhead and shuttle to the Colchuck Lake TH, beginning our hike at first light. We'll climb to Colchuck Lake at 5600' and from there scramble up the steep, rugged 1-mile long boulderfield-trail to the Upper Enchantments basin at 7800'. From there we'll traverse mostly downhill past Little Anapurna and into the lower basin, passing Prusik Pass (7100'), pass the many lovely lakes of the lower basin, and down over another boulderfield trail to Snow Lake (5400') and on down to the trailhead at 1300', 16.5 miles. If conditions are icy, however, we may decide to take the Snow Lake trail to the lower Enchantments basin and return back the way we came (this route is nearly 20 miles). Because of the elevation, distance and short days, this trip is for very fit hikers who are able to maintain a 2-3 mph pace steadily without frequent rest stops. Raingear and warm non-cotton layers are a must, and trekking poles are strongly recommended to save the joints and provide stability on the terrain. A headlamp is also critical gear since it's very likely that we will finish the last couple of miles in the dark. More details on carpooling will be worked out as the date approaches. Participants may want to camp or stay at a motel the night before due to the need for a very early start.
