Day Hike - Dungeness Spit

Beach hike on the Olympic Peninsula. Fancy-colored seaweeds, birds, seals and a bit of geology all in the banana belt of Washington.

  • Mileage: 11.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 130 ft

Northgate park & ride at 0630.

Ferry ride involved, so carpooling will cost extra. We'll aim for the 0710 ferry from Edmonds. Entrance to the Spit is free with an America the Beautiful pass, so if you have one of those, please bring it!

The spit can be several degrees colder than the parking lot in the woods above and is often windier as well.

We'll investigate the rainbow of marine algaes and whatever else might be found on the beach, keep an eye out for birds other than gulls and perhaps see a seal. We'll also learn about how the spit was formed and why it's growing longer each year.

Note that the intertidal substrate on the spit is primarily sand and cobble, so there are no tidepools.
