The hike is around 10 miles RT with ~2700' of cumulative gain. The trail begins with an immediate gentle uphill along an old road for ~1 mile/400 feet to the top of "Little Hump." There will then be a quick downhill, and a mile of relatively flat trail. 2.5 miles in, there is a steep section where 1000ft will be gained in about a mile- we will take this part of the hike slower than the flats & downhills. From this point, there will be another 1.2 miles to 5 Mile Camp, dropping 700 feet of elevation. After a lunch break at camp, we will return the opposite way- climbing the 700ft/1.2 miles back up Big Hump, downhill & along the flat, and back up & down Little Hump.
We’ll be sticking to a 1.5 -2.0 mph pace, potentially slower during the Big Hump climb depending on the group's pace. I anticipate a break at 15 minutes to change layers, and water breaks around the top of Little Hump as well as at the Mountain Viewpoint halfway up the Big Hump climb. We will have a lunch break at 5 mile camp.
